TL:DR:
To draw strength and feed determination, draw inspiration from those who've achieved their dreams through determination, like NASA engineer José M. Hernández.
His "recipe for success" included setting goals, learning, and never giving up.
Solopreneurs have the tenacity to succeed, but we need a recipe to make our dreams come true.
Finding inspiration to succeed.
If you are reading this post, you probably have a dream that you want to realise and are looking for inspiration that propels you towards those stars, allowing your dreams to take flight.
Today, we will explore a unique formula of an individual who overcame societal and situational adversities to became one of the few on earth who touched the stars.
His name is José Hernández. A migrant farm boy whose unwavering drive and determination helped him become one of the few Latino NASA astronauts.
Using a recipe that guides success
One day when José got frustrated with his life as a child farm worker that affected his school education, his father, Salvador Hernández, shared with him his “recipe” to success using five "ingredients". José used this recipe to guide his life towards becoming one of the few Latino NASA astronauts.
Here's how José applied the recipe
Ingredient #1: “Find your goal”
From a child to an adult, he had one big dream of being an astronaut.
Ingredient #2: “Know how far you are”
While José was blessed to have the support (and sacrifices) of his family, he knew he needed to be outstanding to qualify for the space programme.
Ingredient #3: “Draw a roadmap”
José graduated with an engineering degree, worked to gain in imaging research and development and sent 12 applications despite being rejected.
Ingredient #4: “If you don’t know how, learn”
Undeterred, he kept building his competency and skillset with tenacity to narrow the gap between being accepted and rejected. This included learning how to speak Russian, be a pilot, scuba diver - while being a good parent to five children and a loving husband.
Ingredient #5: “When you think you’ve made it, you probably have to work harder”
His dream came true when he made it into the NASA space programme on his 12th application in 2004. In his training, he had to work hard to learn basic astronaut skills like spacewalking, operating the space station, flying T-38 jet planes and controlling a robotic arm.
The day came on 28 August 2009, he finally entered space as a part of the STS-128 mission crew.
